Oxfam, partners inspire girls to achieve dreams

Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education deputy director responsible for inclusive education Lucy Magagula has urged girls to stay focused to achieve their dreams.

She said government is prioritising girls’ education by ensuring that even those from vulnerable households are supported to complete secondary education and advance to tertiary level.

Magagula said this on Monday during the closing of a three-day education summer camp that Oxfam in Malawi and Concern Youth Organisation conducted in Machinga District.

“We understand the challenges many families face in providing for their children to complete primary, secondary and tertiary education. That

is why government has put in place initiatives to ensure that no one is left behind as highlighted in Agenda 2063,” she said.

Former Machinga East legislator Esther Jolobala (United Democratic Front), who was a motivational speaker, also challenged girls in the district to take education as a weapon to break the cycle of poverty.

“Our district has been labelled as one where people do not go to school. It is high

time we openly discussed challenges that limit our children, especially girls, from achieving their goals,” she said.

Oxfam in Malawi gender and education programmes officer Twambilire Kayuni said they are organising girls’ camps to equip learners with life skills, career guidance and mentorship.

“Through these camps, we encourage girls to make informed choices and take charge of situations affecting them,” she said.

Alice Saizi, one of the participants from Liwonde Secondary School, said the camp boosted her confidence and motivated her to put more effort into science subjects.

The girls’ education summer camps have been organised in Balaka, Machinga and Phalombe districts under a project Oxfam in Malawi is implementing. It targets over 300 vulnerable girls with support from Oxfam Hong Kong and the Scottish Government
